Zagreb Energy Week: Uniting stakeholders to achieve the city's CO2 reduction objective
13 June 2014 - 16:07

Since 2010, the Covenant signatory city of Zagreb organises each year an ambitious awareness-raising event: Zagreb Energy Week. This year's edition was held from 12 to 17 may 2014, under the motto "Development we don't want to stop, but pollution we can!"

During 6 days, 43 workshops and conferences were organised, involving a wide range of players: local kindergartens, schools and faculties, cities from the EU and beyond, private companies from the energy sector, representatives from the EU institutions, and European networks of local authorities such as Energy Cities, EUROCITIES and ICLEI.

The 15 and 16 May were dedicated to the conference "Investing in the future - World cities sharing smart, sustainable energy solutions", with presentations by the cities of Brussels, Warsaw, Torino, Belo Horizonte, Shangai and Zagreb. Representatives from the European Investment Bank and proKlima Hannover introduced innovative financing instruments supporting climate and energy actions.

The city of Zagreb puts a lot of efforts in achieving its Covenant of Mayors objectives. The Zagreb Energy Efficient City - ZagEE project notably aims at increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewables in city-owned buildings and equipment. With ZagEE the city has planned to refurbish 87 buildings between 2013 and 2017, achieving energy savings of 33.526 MWh per year while creating 600 jobs.
