Covenant of Mayors Session at Urban Future Global Conference 2019
Just ahead of COP24, the European Commission published a new 2050 strategy for reducing its GHG emissions, which will contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement. In the big shift to decarbonise our economy by 2050, cities are increasingly acknowledged as laboratories for transformative and sustainable solutions, which encompass technology and are anchored into participatory governance processes.
Many European cities have been designing their 2050 roadmaps to become more resilient, bring their emissions close to zero, involving all sectors and citizens. Long-term planning requires bold commitments, broad support, and forward-looking action.
Signatories of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy share a vision to 2050 to accelerate the decarbonisation of their territories, strengthen their capacity to adapt to unavoidable climate change impacts, and allow their citizens to access secure, sustainable and affordable energy, with milestones in 2020 and 2030. They take stock periodically of where they stand, and make improvements to their plans.
Their achievements are rooted in the ability to create a dynamic of change and maintain it beyond political mandates, engaging citizens and working across different sectors and departments.
Organised by the Covenant of Mayors Europe, this session on cities leading long term climate strategy will target elected local representatives and focus on key factors to sustain long term and ambitious strategies.
The panel discussion among local elected representatives, and the interaction with peers in the audience, will showcase examples from Covenant of Mayors signatories who are leading the way in long-term planning, to inspire other cities to do the same.
The Covenant of Mayors will have a stand for the whole duration of the Conference. Find us and sign your city up to the Covenant of Mayors objectives!
